It is a fine powder of ground plant material and tree ash, prepared by hand in a long and labour-intensive process by the indigenous people of Peru. Traditionally it is blown through each nostril using a pipe - a kuripe for self-application, or a tepi when another person administers it. It is used ceremonially, as part of a ritual.
